About the organisation
Stepping Forward Together is a community led group involving service users, members of the public and health care professionals. Our aim is to increase awareness of falls prevention services and encourage people to work together to increase understanding about how to reduce your risk of falling.
Falls Ambassadors
I’m a retired but now self-employed teacher educator. I worked in Further Education for about 27 years, latterly becoming Team Leader of Languages at Aberdeen College.
I was keen to participate in this project, having already experienced a couple of falls which left me with a severe knee problem, and feel I can help to encourage others to work on recovery through what is available in Aberdeen. I really didn’t know about the Falls Clinic or Sport Aberdeen, but came across them by chance and have not looked back. Had effective signposting been in place at the time, I’d have recovered much sooner, but I’m now mobile again, and largely pain-free. Helping the Stepping Forward Together team to establish the route to recovery is a great project to be involved in.

Dr Peter J Stephen. (Doctorate came from Aberdeen University in 2012 for assistance given whilst Lord Provost of the City 2007-2012). Over the years I have had many voluntary involvements , in a wide range of interests, but now winding down. Have worked with NHS, in the current project and in a similar previous one. I can still walk our dogs, but my falls have not been serious, yet do alert me to the dangers and problems.

I am a retired physiotherapist. I run a small physiotherapy business and still do some bank hours for the NHS. As well as my physiotherapy qualification, I am a postural stability instructor. For many years, I have been passionate about encouraging people of all ages to remain active and my specialist subject has been falls management and prevention.
I am delighted to be part of the Stepping Forward Together Project as I wish to use any avenue possible to get the messages about active aging and falls out to as many people as possible. It is great to be part of a group which includes people who have already experienced falls and wish to help others reduce their risk of falling.

I am a retired Occupational Therapist. I worked for 20 years on Deeside and had a specialist interest in falls rehab and prevention.
When I saw the advertisement for Stepping Forward Together I felt I had to be involved. I now realise, when I was part of the service providing the rehab for those who had fallen, we did not take enough care with sign posting into our service. This is the opportunity to help resolve that difficulty.

I am retired having previously worked for 40 years as a Nurse/ Nurse Educator In the NHS. I am excited about being part of this forward thinking project. It attracted my interest because I have recently been involved in supporting staff who work with patients with Dementia and I do have skills that could be of value to the project. I also have an elderly father who is prone to falling and we are working to together to lessen the likelihood of a ‘ tumble’. On a personal note, I have fallen myself so know how it has the potential to lower your confidence and make you fearful.

I am Hilary Tyrrell and am aged 77. I have worked with my husband running a Company in Aberdeen I handled all the financial side plus all the administration When I finally retired at the age of 69 I joined Asda to work in the Admin dept where I still help out if they have a shortage in the department. I also used to be a Scottish Slimmer leader which involved helping people with their battle of weight.
I chose to work as an Ambassador as I enjoy meeting people and feel that it helps everyone if you are able to discuss your problems with someone who has experienced similar problems
I have had a few falls over the past years but fortunately, have not done any serious damage However I am now very careful when out and about particularly where steps are involved.

I work across Health & Transport sectors to reduce health inequalities, the integration of transport and health services and protect the environment. Outside work I enjoy writing songs, painting and yoga.
I wanted to become a Falls Ambassador because once I realised how common and how preventable falling might be I wanted to learn more for myself and to help others.
Andrew Stewart
